Racism

The term racism is often thrown around in the Affirmative Action literature base—the advocates of affirmative action are normally the ones calling their opponents racist. Aside from being a highly charged word, it’s often difficult to say “I’m not being racist” without sounding even more racist. These news articles attempt to tip toe around the racist language or throw the term back into the advocate’s faces. It’s up to the debaters to determine how they will answer claims of racism. These articles will helpfully assist in that decision.

Anti-Affirmative action isn’t racism.

  • Claims of racism stop debate
  • “Utilizing race as a tool to disarm the opposing party’s micro-arguments is a weak-minded and dangerous strategy.”
  • Race is important but the term racism should not be used to advance policy positions

Racism still present.

  • Although legal discrimination is “thing of the past,” discrimination is still felt by youth
  • Black students receive harsher punishment in school
  • School counselors tell black students they can’t get into college

Affirmative action promotes racism.

  • Promotes ”laziness and handouts”—not the strongest argument by far
  • Failed to achieve desired effects
  • Increases racial tensions—probably the strongest argument in the piece
  • This is also a college opinion piece, so take the analysis with a grain of salt
